Deionized Water Applications

Reduce operating costs, increase ROI, become compliant to an industry standard, reduce down time and more.

There are many applications for deionized water in commercial and industrial settings. Deionized water can be used to reduce blow down, reduce scaling, or to comply to a standard. For example, ultrapure water is generally required in pharmaceutical, electronics and optical manufacturing processes as well as medical, research and dialysis applications.

Comply to a standard such as ASTM, ANSI, etc.

Technical standards on water quality have been established by a number of professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society (ACS), ASTM International, the U.S. National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) which is now CLSI, and the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP). The ASTM, NCCLS, and ISO 3696 classify purified water into Grade 1–3 or Types I–IV depending upon the level of purity. These organizations have similar, although not identical, parameters for highly purified water. Many laboratory, pharmaceutical, medical, research and dialysis applications require ultrapure water to meet one of these standards.

Pretreating boiler feed water to reduce scaling and energy use.

Impurities in water become an important consideration when water is to be used for steam generation. With the trend toward higher-pressure boilers, pretreatment has become the key to successful operation of industrial power plants. Feedwater must be pretreated to remove impurities to control deposition, carryover, and corrosion in the boiler system. Also, treated water has no minerals for scale formation and has very low dissolved gasses.

Pretreating cooling tower make-up water to reduce scaling and energy use.

The primary use of large, industrial cooling towers is to remove the heat absorbed in the circulating cooling water systems used in power plants, petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, natural gas processing plants, food processing plants, semi-conductor plants, and for other industrial facilities such as in condensers of distillation columns, for cooling liquid in crystallization, etc. The chemistry of the makeup water including the amount of dissolved minerals can vary and cause problems such as scaling. Treating the circulating cooling water in large industrial cooling tower systems can minimize scaling.

Food and beverage processing quality.

Water hardness is also a critical factor in food processing. It can dramatically affect the quality of a product as well as playing a role in sanitation. The hardness of water may be altered or treated by using a deionization system. The hardness of water also affects its pH balance which plays a critical role in food processing. For example, hard water prevents successful production of clear beverages. Water hardness also affects sanitation; with increasing hardness, there is a loss of effectiveness for its use as a sanitizer.

Treating hotel and restaurant water.

Water purity can affect dish washing efficiency, washing mashine lifespan, linen/textile lifespans and more. Deionization systems can increase system efficiency as well as the lifespan of the water using machinery.

Other commercial and industrial applications.

Deionized water can be used to increase the efficiency of car washes, apartment building water, the purity of manufacturing water and more.
